Hey there I'm running a traxxas rustler xl-5 (electric) with a 4200 mAh venom batt. I have everything else stock. What could i get to make it have a bit longer run time + better top speed.?

so when you mean gearing it up you mean what?
and also a lipo battery, Is it better to have higher amount of voltage/cells or mah?

on the gearing it all depends on if you are looking for bottom end grunt to get off the line fast or if you are looking for top end more speed. from what i know the stock gearing is pretty good on them, you might just try running a lower or higher turn motor for what you want. The batteries are a big reason for your run time and more power. the bigger the battery doesnt always mean the more performance, just a longer run time. A lipo battery wiith the rustler would be great for run time and alittle more power.

Lipo- the higher the mah the more run time the higher the volts the more punch.
Example:
2s 5000mah 7.4 v
3s 5000 mah 11.1v
4s 5000mah 16.8 v
all of these will have about the same run time but the 16.8v will have more punch than the 7.4. BUT the 7.4 is more than you'll ever need this is what the racers are using and usally its any where from a 3200 mah pac to a 6000 mah pac (for the racers)

With the rustler you get a 31 or so tooth pinion, you can put that on for more top speed, but i can tell you from experience that its quite slow off the mark with that on.
if your using it on an offroad track, go with a 20,21 or 22 tooth pinion and the stock 86 spur, in conjuction change the motor to a 27 turn stock motor, commenly available from hobby stores.
The reason for the multiple pinion sizes really depends on the temperature of the place you play with it. If its hot than go for a lower pinion (20 tooth) or if your crazy like me and just wanna have fun, put in a higher one anyway and cook motors
If its a cool or cold area where u play, go for the 22 tooth. a stock 27 turn motor can easily handle the 22 tooth for decent periods of time, and go quite nicely.
Dont get a modified (brushless) motor just yet. Learn stock motors, they are not slow by any means, but some mod motors can be too much for a begineer.
lipos are another choice, but really not nessicary for the beginner. I reckon 4200 MaH batteries, they run very good for bashing around, and ample for race conditions.
I chose the rustler as well as my first r/c car, and i've been getting into the local racing scene as much as possible since then. Their is a lot of changes that can be made to the rustler to make it a true "race truck", but dont let that get in the way of good fun and learn what you can where you can.
