El Cajon RC speedway in San Diego - Circa 1988-1989
Are there any members here that used to race at the El Cajon RC speedway in El Cajon, CA? The outdoor dirt track was located near the full sized el cajon speedway, near gillespe field.
I raced there in the late 80s... 2wd buggy, a JRX2

Yep... there was a massive onroad track there as well, oval around the outside and roadcoarse through the middle, with a massive driver's stand.
Im trying to remember the exact years.. but I think i stopped racing there when I went away to boarding school for highschool, so that must of been the summer of 1990 that was my last. I raced there from 88 to 90 i think.
I actually remember when the track got transponders. When I just started there, you had 1 guy running the computer and manually entering laps, and a second guy would watch the cars and call out car numbers to him. After a while, we got transponders~! It was a huge deal... brand new!

Actually that site was home to three seperate business'. First was Cajon R/C Speedway run by Norm sullivan with his son. Second was M & L Raceway run by Mike and Larry. Lastly was Loki Hobbies and Raceway run by me (Mopar / Ed) and my partner Jim Hughes. Our Logo was a little viking dude with shield and sword raised. After Jim left to pursue other business, I continued with mom til we ended up closing a few years later. We had a 200' x 100' oval with a road coarse in the middle, this track was origonally a 1/4 mile midget oval in the 60's. The dirt track was 125' x 85' red clay. Best part of the dirt track was based on suggestions from a friend we added gypsum to the dirt to keep it from clumpping and packing and tires never wore out. All you need were a set of step-pin rears and any front you like to dial in the steering.

I used to race there. Kris Moore and Barry Baker also used to race there regularly. Back in those days we also had the track at Jack Murphy stadium (Qualcomm) and I also used to race at Eddie and Linda's place in Del Mar. Great times back then. I started with a gold tub RC10 and bought the first JRX2 that Eddie got into the shop.
