What are the differences between the different versions? Also, what handling differences will I notice between the versions?

mbx5 to a pro spec- beefier parts like shock towers , alloy rear uprights, steering arm, front rear chassis braces and titanium turn buckles

MBX5R is like the pro spec but has a milled chassis so the suspension arms can have more travel, longer shocks front and back, 1 peice engine mount, different front end parts to allow more steering travel.

Also, Mugen has made about three dozen running changes since the first MBX5 standard kit was sold. Within each kit (standard MBX5, ProSpec and MBX5R) these running changes have been made. So a standard MBX5 kit bought in May of 2004 will not be the same as one sold in May of 2006.

Best regards,

Do you know what the different front end parts are that allow more steering travel?

Front uprights and front lower arms and the outer rod ends, I think. I know they changed the ackerman plate, but that just moved the holes slightly.

I've got a 5R coming and was wondering what you guys are running for diff fluids and shock oils. Was thinking of the Ninja motor as well with either a JP2 or 3 pipe.

I shot a message over to mugen USA to get the specific part numbers on what is different between the MBX5 and MBX5R.

The little I did drive my MBX5 I was quite happy with it. Turned excellent on the track and tracked straight and true.

THe 5r has better shocks ( bottom threads in vs. circlips ) more down travel and stiffer plastic arms.

With the added down travel comes problems like cvd chatter and reduced steering throw ( knuckles bind on pivot balls, check your throw at full droop and at ride height).

I think the car works better without using all the extra down travel you get from the new shocks. I limit mine about to where an older MBX5 would be. The major changes for the R are the shocks and towers, front lower hinge pin plate gives 1 degree less kickup, the ackerman plate moves the holes back a bit. They did modify the arms and chassis for more down travel also. The steering knuckles were also modified for more steering throw although you can dremel the old ones and get to the same place. If you get the shocks and towers you will be running basically the same car that Scott Hughes used to take 2nd at the World's.

The shocks are a huge upgrade over the old ones. The oil stays clear and the shocks stay consistent for a long time. The car is better in the rough even though the old car was pretty good.
