Since you are making your own batteries, have you thought of a 6 cell, hump pack configuration, with some foam on each end of the pack to absorb some of the 'rough driving' shall we call it?

Warp fiberglass strapping tape lengthwise around your packs. Put a turn of two around the bottom 6 cells, a turn or two around the 2-cell hump and then tape the two together. Either that you need to glue a piece of something to your packs to give them a "back bone."

mod up a new battery strap to go lengthwise like the associated or losi trucks that should keep the batteries in the veh Just takes a little fab work.

I've experienced the same in Rustlers and I believe the issue is chassis flex. Even with the pack held tightly they packs end up curved or the solder leads break off. It's just the nature of the plastic chassis.
The old Rusty's used to have an optional aluminum chassis plate that solved this issue. Stick packs also seem to fare better than side x side configurations in Traxxas trucks.
