Hello all,

I used to race nitro, but sick and tired of fussing with the engine. I am looking at getting into some electric bashing and maybe racing. I am not sure what exactly I would need to charge, but likely a lipo for the radio and a lipo or two for the electric buggy. Is there a recommended charger? I am not opposed to going DC charger + power supply if that makes sense.

Right now I am ,looking at the Ultra Power 120AC Duo sold ironically at Walmart.

Should I be considering other units?

I have a similar charger. I believe there are several generic chargers in this range that all have the same specs with just slightly different case designs. If you are just doing basic 1C charging, then it will work well. There are some "nice to have features" that it won't have, but for basic charging and discharging, it will work. If money is not an issue, there are better chargers out there and if you are planning to race competitively, you should probably look at investing in one of the better ones.

Thanks for the response. Can you give me an idea of what some the nice to have features are and what chargers might be a little better than the UP?

Basically it's the same as the one I posted but the B6 V2 has a built-in power supply and charges up to 6.0A (discharge at 2.0A). Although the B6 comes with an AC/DC power supply too and the actual unit is smaller. There's even a smaller one which is the B6 mini and has the a slight difference in specs.

The main concern with chargers in this range is usually they don't have dedicated sources for their power per channel. So it's not 120W per channel. Each channel can use up to 120W, but that is 120W for the device and it will share that across both channels so you need to do some calculations to make sure sure you can charge two batteries that you intend to use, at the amps you want to charge.

If I were to do it all over again, I'd likely spend the extra money on something like:

OK folks the recommendation will change a little bit. I picked up an Acopian W48CT25 Regulated Power Supply so will need a DC based charger. Thanks a lot.

That's the million dollar question. I am starting from scratch and want not to spend too much money.

I assume the junsi iCharger 4010DUO is pretty well the top of the line for most people. I am having sticker shock on that price.. I would really like to find a charger that is the best bang for the buck. I would love to stay $150 or less, but am not going to spend $150 just to find out that it doesn't do some of the essential things.

Unless you want to charge multiple packs at once there's no point in spending a ton of money on a charger. At 1C a 5000mAh 4S pack pulls 60 watts. Even 100W is probably more than enough for most. More discharge is nice because 5W or 10W takes forever to discharge but you can get an external 50-150W discharger for $20 and use that while you charge something else.

I got the x6 and love it

It is a little bit of a pain to use if your new but there is a ton of videos on YouTube and that help a ton

I recommend looking for a charger that is capable of a decent discharge rate. Either that or build a dedicated discharger using resistors.
