Default Rustler Help

Just got the Rustler 2day and iam transfering the electronics from my Touring Car into the Rustler.
Planning on running Off-Road Sunday, and been looking over the Rustler, and its not very adjustable?

Iam gonna run Stock Truck for club racing, then whenver the Winterblast comes to Albion, ill run 19T. But iam gonna learn with Stock first!

My questions is what can i do to the truck to make it adjustable???
Ive been looking at parts on Ebay, and been very curious.
Can VXL parts fit on the older Rustlers??? (like the shocks)
Does Assocaited springs work on Ruster/VXL shocks???
Can i run VXL turnbuckles on the truck??? The Rustler trunbuckles are just a big plastic rod!

Can the Rustler NT body work on the electric Rustler???
Will Proline Mounted Pins fit on the Rustler, or do i have to use the gay stock wheels, then buy the inserts and tires???
how can i lower the truck??? Its REALLY high up!
What can i do to the tranny???

Basically anything to get a Rustler race ready!!!

thanks, NightRider Racing

here is a link that has some parts for the rustler. look on towerhobbies.com also to find some stuff. ther ereally isnt alot of stuff you can do to it. if i remember right the tie rod ends are just a solid piece of plastic, get some adjustable ones. on the shocks you might have to get some off a different car with a lower suspesion. if all else fails try your local hobby shop and ask for help. the gearing you can change motors, change pinion gear, change spur gear, get a bigger battery but not to big to were you over heat the motor and fry the brushes.

Good luck

Hey dude, I can help a little...

I race a Traxxas Rustler that was originally completely stock (xl-5) as is yours currently. Now i've got a ton of $ into it...opps!

A lot of my upgrades came directly from traxxas support at www.buytraxxas.com or www.traxxas.com. I'd really recommend going to your local shop to get all of your hop ups...It's just easier and it supports the local hobby shops & activities.

My upgrades include:
Adjustible Front & Rear Camber links (stock on new VXL) -absolute must have
XL Big Bore Shocks front and rear
5x11 ball bearings all the way around- Huge difference!!
5x11 front and rear cariers - I have alum. for both and custom toe in for rear
Fastlanemachines.com extended front and rear arms made out of alum.- extends width by about an inch in the rear and 3/4 in the front. - drawback...you have to custom make front and rear camber rods...i'm working on some new adj. rods soon. for now they work fine.
GREAT UPGRADE: VXL MOTOR AND SPEED CONTROL
EVEN BETTER:::::3s (3cell) Lipo 11.1v 4000 mah Battery!!!! - it's like putting NOS in your car!!!

...I'm sure there's more but i gotta run for now.

Check out my videos on www.youtube.com under velineonracer.

Good luck

more:
vxl tranny -alum idler gear, steel diff
I put 30,000 viscosity in my diff to give a little bit more positive traction.
1/8 scale (losi 8ight) truggy wing attached to rear shock tower. - helps a lot at 30+ mph, keeps it from getting squirely.

Default $$$

How much??? including batteries, chargers, & upgrades???
I'm scared to think about it but probably close to $1,000.00.
200 rustler
200 motor
250 battery chargers
115 3s maxamps.com lipo
55 2s truerc.com lipo
80 nimh 4600 mah
250+ easy upgraded parts?
70 3 cheap nimh batteries
....the list goes on for ever...

but i didn't do it all at once..it was a work in progress

To do it all over again..I would start with vxl and lipo...don't waiste time or money on nimh or brushed anything.

if you were going to use your electronics you should have gotten a T4, by the time you get that rustler race ready you will have quite a bit of money stuck into it, a factory team T4 kit is like 230 bucks or the team kit is 190, the rustler is a good bashing truck.

You're right,,,It cost way to much to get it race ready.. I didn't even realize i'd get into this stuff so seriously. I'm curios to see how I stack up against normal race setups (ie. Losi etc) on an indoor track ..so far I'm consistently 1st or 2nd at my club but then again there's only two of us now running lipo...it's really not far for the rest. I also race a losi 8ight truggy which I invested more out of the gate and almost nothing in upgrades so far. I love this stuff!!! I can't wait for Hotbox or ARC to open!!! Props to the guys trying to make the indoor scene happen!

it does not cost too much to get it race ready. some step pin tires for the rear. rpm bumper on the front. 5X11 bearings and carriers all way round. i think the nitro rustler ones fit the rear and the rpm ones the front. check the traxxas forum on how to do it. aluminum shock caps. put some turnbuckles on the front and your set. i would not change the ride height much. most off road courses have some bumps

Racing indoor at S&N's Trackside here in the Milwaukee area, I've seen a couple of fast Rustys. With a decent set of tires and some adjustables (turnbuckles, shocks, etc.) they can hold their own.

Sure, I wouldn't want to use one for my entire racing career, but they're still good trucks for a 1st timer finding out if they can really get into racing or not.

My $0.02
