Hi, I am building a 4 wheel drive electric buggy with my son. I'm using a 5.5T, brushless, sensored motor. I want to know if anyone knows what spur and pinion gear works best for just bashing around. I do plan to use it at West Coast in La Mirada, CA. from time to time. Thanks everyone!

That is a bad buggy to bash... wont last 30 minutes. The are a bit fragile, and are designed for the experienced racer for a race track.... sorry I can't help with gearing. Not many people run 5.5s in a small buggy like that. probably somewhere around 22/85, but i could be a bit off there.

Try a 20T pinion, with the stock spur gear.

They are no more fragile than any other wheeler. Any rc car is great for father son project. With a 5.5 I would use a 19 or 20 with stock spur. Watch your temps every few minutes you w ill be fine. Have fun #1 goal

My two sons also got DEX410`s. The drive at a track 2 times a week, but most of the time the cars are being driven in the streets, on the soccerfield and so on. The cars are much stronger than the Tamiya DF03`s the drove before and are stronger than the HPI`s ans TRAXXAS cars their friends run.
You might get problems with heat with a 5.5t motor and it sure will be fast enough. I would also try 87/20 pinion. My sons uses 8.5t ans 7.5t, being 8 and 10 years old.

Agreed 20t is a good start, and for this scale of 4x4 buggy it is the most durable. I will say I only race mine and a boosted 8.5 is more than enough for any track and will keep up with any setup. Also holds a better temp, turn off boost for small. Med tracks and for bashing. But u have it now, give it a go.

Thanks for the great tips......5.5T motor maybe too much. I still have time to go with a different motor. I was thinking of a 8.5 or even maybe 17.5? If you don't mind me asking what spur and pinion is good for either? Is it more torque than speed you look for when selecting a proper motor? Thanks again.

Run the 75T spur, anything smaller won't mesh proper. And a 30T pinion for a stock (17.5) motor

It's a good buggy. To start out with, you can also turn down the throttle EPA a bit if your son is still getting used to driving between the pipes. Depending on how new he is to driving you could also check out OCRC, which has a separate kids track.

Once he gets used to it though, he'll have one of the better 4wd platforms out there. It's a good 4wd and these days you see mostly b44 series and dex410s then say the old Kyosho Lazers and Schumachers (which are also good). But you'll be able to get some tips from the other drivers.
