Gearing the Novak 17.5 compared to a CO27
Well were going to go up for the Novak race and my son will run in the sportman class with the 17.5.
Couple of questions about the 17.5 gearing:
1) Do I gear about the same as I do for a starting point brushed and brushless?
2) Once I use the gearing as a starting point. Do I use the temp gun to try and obtain about 170 deg motor temp as I am with the 13.5?
The track is about 90 x 48 in size indoor carpet.

Sup Big Dog!
Rodger at Trackside did a lot of testing with a 17.5. He found that he had to gear the motor STUIP tall. Much taller than our 13.5. So i would somewhere around a 4.0 ratio.

I believe there will be a limit on the gear ratio at the Novak race for sportsman class............I don't think it has been determined yet but I will try and find out and get it posted soon

In my 12th scale I ran it at a 2.95 rollout. It made it near impossible to keep it rolled out as the tires got smaller. In my rubber tire/carpet TC, I run it at around 4.2 final drive. I can go lower and will be soon. It's a great "stock" motor. Finding the room to roll it out is a pain. Welcome to the land of big pinions/small spurs.

For 1/12th run something over 3.00. More in the range of 3.18. I have no problem staying with the co27's. Sportpak needs to try harder. You need a 78 spur. You will not be disappointed unless you race sedan then everything is disappointing.

well,he's not asking but alot of people are going to want to know.Our local track last year allowed me to test the 13.5 in 1/12th and decided it was too fast for the stock motors in the class. This year the allow 17.5 in 1/12th. According to CRC (my conversation with John) Franks gearing with the 17.5 was 43-76. I'm geared at 42-92 (which worked well last year for the 13.5) and it ain't fast enough.
