Bought a brand new engine/clutch assembly off a 2.0 RTR. Removed the clutch bell to make sure everything was tight and discovered only 2 aluminum shoes with black springs. Will this be ok to race as is or should I go ahead and throw on a couple carbon shoes? Do the engineers at Losi know something we don't and 2 shoes will suffice? I would think only 2 aluminum shoes would slip quite a bit huh?

It will run, but it will wear out the clutch bell a lot faster. I would stick some carbons in there and change the springs to gold and green. I wouldn't race it with just the 2 shoes, but that is how the RTR comes stock.

I would upgrade to 4 shoes, it will make a huge difference. my stock RTR setup didn't last but maybe half a gallon anyways, so i went to 2 composite with green, and 2 alum. with gold.

you already know the answer as the two above me answer, but if i were you put two comp pads w/ green springs. after this wears out, run 2 alum with gold springs and 2 comp w/ green. i like both set ups.
