One Lap!
One fantastic, or rotten lap... depending on the side of the lap you are on.
After 5 months, over 6000 total laps, 80 minutes of racing in 10 different races (8 minutes each), countless practice laps, big track races, car repairs, and 10 different racers... one lap.
These finals would pit the best against the best of PDX Mini Z to finish the season. We have a number of great racers, and many coming up in the ranks as well. This night, 4 racers are in the ring.
Blaine started the evening with a 1 point season lead over Ty for first. The next battle was for third where Paul was 3 points up over Ken. Race 9 of the series would mix this all up. Ken winning with his PR of 92 laps, putting him just 1 behind Paul, and Ty finishing 2nd, bumps him past Blaine, who had some technical difficulties and dropped to 4th.
Anticipation grows with the thumping on phone calculators, crunching numbers to see the new standings. Now Ty leads Blaine by 1 for the overall, and Paul losing ground on Ken leading only by 1 point now for third.
For the final, we pit 1 and 2 in one race and 3 and 4 in the other, each having a 3rd racer not in either of these battles to keep it fair. Head to head, controller to controller, bumper to bumper, will against will.
One Lap!
While we knew Blaine has the capability of throwing down some serious laps, he had a furious 97 lap pace in race 9 before his technical difficulties dropped him to only finish 84. Such is racing, but this was also his personal best pace and overall best pace for the club ever. None of us have come that close to 100 laps... (our next goal). We have worked hard to get up to and cresting the 90's for the past couple years striving for the 110 laps the best racers complete in 8 minutes with their modified cars. So to hit the 90's is HUGE with our near stock cars. Driver ability and working together on the track, is a very large effort in our club and we are all getting better all the time.
Blaine would take the A main over Ty, 91 laps to 88. That would seem to lock it in for Blaine. But that actually put us at even overall (based on two worst drops), leaving it up to the tie breaker. How will the next race impact things.
Paul and Ken battle from the start. Ken jumps out to a lead that would presume to be hard to catch by Paul, but a few bobbles by Ken and a consistent effort by Paul, on one of his best nights, he would catch up and pass Ken. The last 3 or so minutes on the same lap, lap after lap, they kept their nerves in check and ended seconds apart, Ken getting caught at the line with 88 laps, and Paul taking the win with 89 laps.
Paul's 89 laps, and Kens 88 with an 8:00.082 (8 minutes 0 seconds) beat Ty's 88 with an 8:01.175 (8 minutes 1 second), and that's the ONE LAP difference that settles the season.
Blaine still would have won the tie breaker with more wins over Ty (5 to 3). And I wouldn’t have it any other way.
And this is why every lap counts and you never give up no matter what happens during the race. Hitting the corners, other cars, losing bodies, parts, wheels, forgetting battery clips, having break downs technically or mentally, you've got to know that one lap... no, EVERY lap counts.
With huge fireworks and fanfare, we congratulate Blaine the overall winner for 2018 Fall HFAY Season! Great Job!
Special thanks to Richard, Justin and Chris H, for bearing with us during our finale. Justin came from Eugene. Quite a commitment.
The next adventures of HFAY will begin in January. Before then, we’ll have our Christmas party and awards ceremony on December 3rd. This is open to all as we’ll have a party with a large track and food and prizes.

This is why crawling appeal to me so much, It's just me and the rocks, other opinions don't matter. If I run into someone else doing the same thing cool, He/She has their rocks too.
