AE is owned by Thunder Tiger a Taiwan rc company. Thunder Tiger left the name alone. Although I think most of designing is done in the US.

I guess both. Don't know if it was 50-50 deal. Maybe GIjoe64 knows.

If I'm not mistaken, the owner (Roger Curtis) sold the company to Thunder Tiger. The operations at AE in California are primarily responsible for R&D and hardly any manufacturing is done there. I believe TT handles that overseas.
TT have kept a hands off approach at AE and kind of let them have more free reign. They have been successful and profitable so no reason to mess with that.

New Ownership
In 2000, Gene Husting took the decision to retire and sold his share to Roger Curtis.[1] In 2005, Curtis took semi-retirement and sold Associated Electrics to Thunder Tiger, a Taiwanese RC model manufacturer.[2] Thunder Tiger expressed hope that the buyout of Associated would make it the fourth largest RC model merchant in the world, following the three leaders at that time (in order) Tamiya, Kyosho, and Futaba/O.S.
