Default Any idead on how to remove stripped engine head screws?

I stripped one of the screws on my O.S. V-Spec this weekend...argh!!!

Any suggestions on how to remove that stripped screw?

Thanks in advance for any "constructive" suggestions.

Drill it out or use a screw extractor if you can get it through the hole in the head. I had this happen to me on an RB Engine....took some time, but I drilled off the head of the stripped bolt carefully and all was well again.

I've never owned a Vspec, so I don't know if you can do this with one but I've done it before with other engines. If you can get at the head of the bolt through one of the slots between heatsink fins with a cutoff wheel on a dremel, then cut if off. Should be able to then get the heatsink off and dremel a slot in the screw and back it out.

I helped a buddy do this at the SIC in Alabama last year. We took a drill bit and drilled through the head of the bolt, when the head of the bolt breaks off, the head will come off over the threaded part of the bolt. Then you can use a pair of pliers to remove the threaded part. I have done this numerous times and it always works, just take your time, you may want to start with a smaller size bit, then increase the size to completely remove the caphead.

Hope this helps and good luck.

Thanks for the drill bit idea. I put a bit in the drill press and it drilled the head of the cap head screw right off. Worked perfectly!

There was an article on this in one of the magazines recently. I'll see if I can find it.
