Jason has DRMO and said can sign for ISO, as well as I can ask Col. Ramey to do the same. So if we tag one there, sure we can get it signed for in the next week or so.

I won't be here from the 20th-29th and can't make it up to the track before I take off.

I will try to get Mike and the equipment up there some time in the next two weeks pending weather, would like to have it good and wet through for a good packing...ok that sounded wrong....

OH man... I really can't believe I'm asking this... but what is a good brand for a 1/8th brushless setup? Oh, you have no idea how much that hurt to ask! lol...but seriously what is a good setup for a buggy? And what are some good batteries?

Tough question, it really depends on your budget. If you plan on racing how competative do you want to get? There are several different rollers that can be got for around $300. It is generally thought that the castle Creation Monster Mamba with the 2650kv motor($260) as the best combo for a 1/8 buggy. Max Amps are very pricey batteries, but are considered the best, I have a couple and the performance is incredable. A 6500mah battery will run about $130. Whatever batteries you get you will need 4 and a charger that is Lipo safe.

.........The numbers can add up quick, it is about the same as top nitro but I think over time the Nitro will cost you more.

I just spent some time researching several options, if you have a $$ in mind I can make some recommendations.

Ken, right now I'm just looking to get into the class. I'm starting the conversion on a new z01-b when it gets in the mail. So I would say...i don't want to spend a fortune...just something that will get me on the track with you guys and have some fun and be a little bit competitive.

Also...what does the KV rating represent? The higher the number the faster the motor is and the lower it has more torque?

I'm ok spending 300 dollars on an esc/motor combo. Batteries are crazy expensive though! Why do i need 4 of them again?

I'd get the 5200 30C LiPos from Turnigy. They are like $28 each and are every bit just as good as the LiPos you get for over $100. I've heard nothing but great things about them on this site. You can get them from www.hobbycity.com

As far as motors go, there is a new trend that is getting more popular...lower KV motors with 5S or 6S battery set ups. Basically, it's about the same as a higher kv motor on 4S, but it's supposed to run much cooler, therefore more reliable.

With that said, I'm keeping the gear that comes with the Vorza (Mamba Monster 2200kv combo) and using it on 4S.

KV rating is RPM per volt. A 4s battery is 14.8v running a 2200kv motor = 32,560 RPM with no load
2560kv motor = 39,220 RPM with no load

When looking at your conversion pay close attention to the battery box(s) and make sure the batteries will fit. There is no industry standard on sizes.

You may get by with two batteries on a race day if you have enough time to top off between heats. I would expect our qualifiers will be around 5 minutes with 10-15 min. mains. Whatever batteries you get will need a full charge to make the main.

Having run brushed motors all of my RC life I am also clueless on brushless (I do have one in my glider but none on my cars). I have noticed that as far as separate components for 1/8 go the Speed Passion BL motors are much cheaper than the mainstream ones. There are also the usual Chinese brands on ebay but have any of you had any experience with these?

RCP may give us some banners for the track...we can use the active hobby ones for floor matts...

Anyways, thanks for all the info guys. I talked to a guy on here who's z01-b is set up nice so i'm gonna steal his set-up for now. I'm thinking a Tekin 1700kv setup with 4s. That seems to be the way to go for track use. I've been told 5s is almost too much for a track.

Turnigy batts looked good. Didn't see the 5200 mah ones but i did see some 5800 mah ones for like $50. It's not $28 but its not $150-$200 either!

I second the Mamba Monster combo and for a little cheaper you can run the EZrun system which has been getting good reviews in magazines and online. RC paradise has decent prices on there off-brand lipos. The 3 cell (11.1V), 4000mAh is ¥6900 and the 2 cell (7.2V), 4000mAh is ¥4000

The importance of C values is with discharge though. Say your battery has a 15C discharge rating, and is a 3600mAh – do the basic maths. 3.6 amps x 15C = 54 amps. This means the battery can deliver 54 amps. If you have a motor/esc that can draw 65 amps though, then this battery cannot deliver enough current. Consequently you will either have a slow car, ruin the battery or both. It is important therefore to ensure you get high C cells capable of supplying enough current to your system.


Bottom line, know how much current the motor can draw, how much the ESC can delivery and buy batteries that can do the job. A motor that wants more than the ESC can deliver = hot ESC. Battery not able to provide enough current = hot battery. Over gearing to get more speed = hot motor
