I heard a rumor that LiPo warming won't be allowed? Is that true? If so, how will it be enforced?

I just read the rule book and it says the only lipo warming that is legal is to stick it down your pants........the temp will be checked in tech......if it exceeds 98.6 deg's you will not be allowed to run.

That's right it was Charlie's kid!!! I should have kept the body - maybe someday I'd have a famous painter's 1st edition.

Thanks Josh. The reason I ask is because if warmers are disallowed, but the batteries aren't teched for temp, people are surely going to charge at 12A to get heat in them. That's WAY more dangerous and detrimental than stuffing it down your shorts an hour before your race.

It's a little bit of a bummer that the info is coming out now. That's one of the things that helps LiPo be more comparable to NiMH in low-amp racing.

If there is a temp rule on lipo shouldn't there be a temp rule on nimh? Just saying :P

The only reason I say this is.. It seems the same things that make lipo dangerous are the same things that make nimh dangerous..

Nope, they're fast. You can warm a LiPo to around 130F with no ill-effects, and gain some respectable voltage.

I have charged a lipo at 12 amps (purely experimental, in a bunker, etc). At the end of the charge the pack was actually cooler than when it went on. The GFX which is capable of charging at 12 amps reduces the amperage as the charge nears completion. This keeps the pack cool for almost the whole charge. If the pack is creating heat while charging, there is something wrong. Heat is created only when you cannot cram any more electrons into the pack and you keep charging it. Because the cut-off is 8.44v, it never hits that point.

Heating the pack with a heating pad will have the same effect as heating it through charging, and it is safer-er. - But don't quote me on that, you burn your face off, it's your fault.

Now that you mention it, perhaps they were getting heat in the pack by discharging it at 35A and then charging it right back up at 12A, or something. Regardless, if the rule is in place, I hope it's enforced in tech. I could see people getting packs too hot trying to keep them warm through tech before their race. I can see why you'd ban heating, to avoid potential issues.
