Possible Spec Onroad Racing for 2012 ?

Default Possible Spec Onroad Racing for 2012 ?

I was thinking back to how popular the spec legend class was. After looking at Tower's website, I found the RJ Speed Legend Spec kits (Sedan and Coupe). Does anyone else think this would be a fun class for those of us who don't wish to drop a ton of cash into onroad?

Kit - $99
ESC - could use one already owned or pick up one (Duratrax model $30)
Battery - 4 cell 4.8v $15.39
Mabuchi silver can - $20

Grand total - around $175

Anyone wanna get this class going?

Why would you dilute on-road any more? If you are looking for a starter class, look to VTA or USGT. You can get any used sedan chassis for a few dollars more. Remember you get back what you put in. That goes for both time and dollars spent.

Another option could be Tamiya Minis/HPI Cup Racers. This would be another class, but it is a class this raced at other local tracks.

A mini is nearly as fast as a VTA with a lipo they are slightly faster on the strait but give some up in sharper corners/hairpins

Too bad marcca doesn't have a weeknight race, baraboo has 7-9 VTAs every week...

I think you will find the 17.5 no timing class more fun and really not that expensive.

Needed:

17.5 Motor ($80)
ESC (Novak GTB $100 or Castle MMP $125)
Servo (Savox SC-1251MG Low Profile $60)
Used Kit ($200 - $300)
Body ($25)
Tires ($35)
Battery (use the one you already have)


Total: $500 - $600

Yes its more - but you can go any where and race against the majority of the entries and be competitive (Marcca included). The sedan class at Marcca is growing every week. Not to mention its likely you have an extra servo, esc, motor laying around that you could use.

Just pull the trigger, take the money from the sale of your alpha and spend it on a sedan.

Not to mention - Are you sure you really want to run brushed motor and NiMh.

Guess you guys missed the point of spec class. Same chassis, same motor, same tires.

I'm sure I could spend $500-$600 on a sedan, but what if I just wanted something simple that would produce some close racing?

To say I am trying to dilute the onroad scene is ridiculous. You take someone new to the hobby and give them a choice of spending money on a vta or sedan compared to one of the legend cars, my bet is that they will go with the spec series.
Plus they know no one has the upper hand with motor or tires. Think of it as a gateway into sedan or vta. Get them in the door with something they feel that they can win with and they'll be hooked on the faster cars in no time.

Yes, I guess I did miss the idea of "Spec", Same this and that. However, the legend platform is very very poor choice. There is no value to new person in the car or the electronics your referencing. For a new person starting they see the sedans and short course trucks. They will thoroughly underwhelmed by a legend car. I know there are groups that do race them, but they are really not all that.

If you want "Spec", Same this and that, don't reinvent the wheel. Tamiya TCS Mini has a huge following. The rules are updated regularly for technology and competition. Speeds are tame and can produce great racing. TCS comes to the area yearly at The Track, and have many other national events.

No I didn't miss your point. I just want you to buy a sedan so I can race you. Mini Cooper sounds and looks like a class I could get into. Gabe has a fleet of them and they looked fun at last years challenge.

If you want to race onroad right now at marcca, a sedan is your only choice, unless you want to race against yourself.

VTA is a fairly inexpensive(?) in the whole realm of things.
It is one way to jump head first into onroad.
The downfall is it is "expensive" for a newcomer.
Power limits & weight limits need to be some what enforced if racing is going to be tight.
Baraboo has a 21.5 limit or Mabuchi silver can $10, but the fastest guy is on a 25.5.
We also heavily enforce the 1550g minimum.
The real key is setup, the cars get real unfriendly real fast with out proper guidance.
The guys with th TC3/4 can be as fast as the Xrays & the Corallys.

The Mini option is awesome (last years favorite), but found guys like tweaking on cars as much as driving, & there is little adjustably on most models.
The nice part is the minis are cheep to run...
Silver can 540 $10, stock tires, included ESC, etc.
The down fall of the M03 & M05 chassis is battery fitment, they do not take square shaped LiPo's, $30 for a pack isn't horrible, but most people wont just get another battery for a specific chassis.
M06 is nice, but only in the US as the "Pro" kit.

Seinor club members need to take a helping hand in newcomers.
If a car looks wong on the track my self or Zach will pull it off & tweak it until it is driveable.
Having proper setup tools like a balance board or scales helps too.
We have spent many Friday Nights in Baraboo working on other peoples setups.

Diluting the race scene with another class sounds like a bad idea, & VTA/GT2 is that entry class that keeps things kind of simple.
Tires, Motors & Weight.
Beyond that is all setup.

SCT onroad always works too
