1/18 mini LST with a traxxas 1/16 system?

You can, but I'm not certain it's a good idea. The VXL-3m (the brushless ESC) reputedly runs very hot, with some users burning through several independent of gearing. I guess the motor itself is just fine - maybe just use a Sidewinder controller instead.
Some find the mini plastic-geared waterproof Traxxas servos weak, so consider going with a metal-geared Hitec unit instead.

It should bolt right up with no problem , as for them running hot well thats all in how its geared .
The main problem you will have is keeping the F/R diffs from stripping out , the center diff can use the newer steel gears from the Mini SCT diff . When I went brushless with my MLST2 I had to shim the diffs pretty tight and carefully break them in to keep them from stripping .
That and set your slipper a little loose . I have 2 Mini E REVO's that I have had since they were released and both are still going strong , never overheated on me even when running 3s .
Here is a short vid of mine from like 3 years ago ....

I have done this conversion. I replaced the Traxxas ESC with a sidewinder ESC, I had to make another motor mount to bolt the velineon motor up and replaced all the gears in the diffs and center tranny with the metal Mini-t gears (Ebay for about $11 a set). The truck flies and is alot of fun, it will do 50-55mph on a 1650 3s lipo. It was alot of fun to build, but as others have said, make sure you shim the diffs, I also shimmed the tranny, have not had any heat problems or any other problems for that matter. Replaced the servos with Hitec HS65-MG's that I bought at my lhs buy one get one free, because they had a huge overstock. I am posting a couple pics so you can see it, these pics are before the new motor mount(made from an old street sign with a dremel and a drill).

Thanx for the vid and pics guys....
I just got the MLST but after sticking a 2s lipo on my MERV the MLST just seems way too slow lol
Just wanted a project I guess...I may go with the traxxas system or the 1/18 CC system
thanx

If you were to put the 1/16 motor in your MLST, with a 3s lipo, you would definitely feel differently, mine flies and is faster, more durable and versatile than my friends MERV's, hence the nickname MERV killer...lol
