You say it acts like it's linked. Does that mean the green light on the receiver is on when the transmitter is on? If no, that should be the case. Like Duster said, you will have to calibrate the ESC to the transmitter. Instructions should be with your ESC. If the tx/rx is not linking, make sure you don't have the BEC and Servo connector reversed also.

i'll check and see about the calibration stuff

IIRC, you should get servo response on the steering if it is linked, just no throttle response until it is calibrated. The BEC connector from the ESC should typically be plugged into channel 2, and steering into channel one. On the Traxxas receivers, there are 2 channel one slots, just make sure you don't have your servo in one and ESC connector in the other.

Is sounds like the TX and RX are not truly linked. If you have servo control but no throttle you will have to calibrate that. Here is the manual if you didn't have it.

Ok... i went through the menu and restored everything to default.... i also linked the 2 together numerous times and still cant get it to work.... but I'm wondering about something....
the transmitter is part #2242 which is just a traxxas 2.4ghz remote, and the reciever is part# 2218 traxxas link.... are these 2 not compatable because one is traxxas link and one is not?.......

I think I see now.... traxxas link 2.4ghz is part#2238 with 2218 reciever and traxxas 2.4ghz system is part#2242 with 2217 reciever.... but the thing is, my transmitter is black, not grey....WTF... its like an in between....
if anyone has a 2217 reciever and wants a traxxas link reciever 2218, I'll trade... straight up...

Looks like you've found your prob. Thats the old, orig 2.4 radio Traxxas came out with 1st. Then the Link 2.4 system followed. They are not compatible. One is DSSS (link) and the other is just spread spectrum.
The link system is better - it has adjustability that the other does not plus it has model memory. The link radio is p/n 2208 - 4 channel and 2209 - 2 channel version.
I got mine on eBay.
Believe the non-link 2.4 radio you have need p/n2217 for a rcvr.

Sorry I keep linking to Traxxas but there is a lot of good info there. This thread explains the various transmitters and receivers they make with part numbers next to each: http://traxxas.com/forums/showthread...=1#post4361675

Thanks for that link - thats a good explanation and it does confirm the two are not compatible. I didn't realize the orig 2.4 TRX radio was gray and not black.
There are other differences the Traxxas guy didn't mention/catch - my radio does not say high output anywhere on the 'foot' and there is no model number with number of channels on the back at the base of the grip on the foot. Mine is blank there. Radio does have the model number listed under the battery cover in the part that doesn't have batteries, as a 2238.
Guess these are just cosmetics differences and as he said there were changes made on the fly.
Do you know if the 'port' thats under the batt cover has any user utility, or is it something else entirely?
