1st race day with the clocked B5. New brand of engine for me. After a couple flameouts here and there and having the needle balance out of wack at first it started to tune in pretty easy, kinda tells you what it needs. Running the werks plug and 2013 pipe and an answer-rc clutch setup. All worked well today. Myself and 3 other drivers raced my truggy today. The last 2 are buggy racers with limited truggy time. There was zero negative feed back abouy truggy or engine. New layout at lost creek has a longer front straight and it's long by most tracks standards and the B5 probably needed another 50 ft to stretch out. Power downlow out of slow corners was very controllable and comfy to drive with the massive grip on the track today and a lower stall speed high bite clutch. It accelerates quite exponentially and in my opinion outpowered the other truggies after it was in tune. After 4 different drivers in a total of 4 races today it finished 4th in the main with man #4 having the least truggy experience. Everybody had a blast driving it and many a blast watching it. Great engine with way too much topend, lol.

what do you guys recommend for breaking in engines?.....the HEAT CYCLE with the 5 three min. runs and then the 3 five min. runs(figure 8s)...letting it cool between all runs and always pre heating(of course)....

If you get Neals hand lapped engines, break-in is idling 1 tank of fuel, then race tune, slightly rich, until the nuts drop.. Other wise it is whatever you feel best with..

I usually wrap the head in a old sock (i find a sock traps a bit of heat while still allowing the head to breath) then heat the engine with a heat gun to 100-110*C then let it idle on the box for about 5mins, then shut it down check the piston is off TDC then let cool.

Then I do 3-4 5min runs around my back yard with the sock in place and preheating and cooling the same as with the first tank, constantly checking that the engine is keeping the heat at about 100-115*C, while doing this i load the motor up but do not let it rev to high and slowly increase the RPMs dont blip the throttle.

Once that is done i take it to the track (prob best to remove the sock before you head down the track though) And basically tune the engine over the next 3-5 tanks while not letting the engine hit peak RPM down the straight till prob the 4th ot 5th tank.

It should be all sweet by that stage, but if the engine still seams tight keep running fuel through it till it is ready to tune. We are very lucky with Neals motors cause there is no 5-8 Ltr run ins and generally speaking the motors are ready for full race conditions alot sooner and there isnt the strain on the internals with his hand lapped piston and sleeves!. With the hand lapping they are probably ready to go sooner but I believe that a few more tanks can not hurt.

I hope this helps, this is the best method i have come up with, i have always had great results from this method, and have never had problems with my motors.

Forgot to mention that this is my best engine on fuel. Lost Creek is the worse fuel mileage track we run on and after topping off, running 45 more seconds then running a 6 min qual plus another lap before i brought it in it was barely under the tank seem in a losi truggy. I believe we were the only truggy to pit only once in a 20 min main. We pitted at around 10:30 into the race, raced the next 9:30 and the fuel level was halfway between the fuel line inlet and the tank seam. I can see this thing on a small bullring track going 15 min in a truggy. The track conditions were awesome, zero dust and massive traction. I probably only ran on a track with that much traction 5 times. I'm mentioning this in reference to clutch setup. It was suggested i run a certain setup but i'm sponsored by answer and that's just that, but i really liked how my clutck worked for my driving under those conditions. If you run on a really tight high bite track put an aggresive clutch on this engine as Neal suggests. I can go slightly more aggresive with my setup by using losi silver springs instead of answers silvers, but doubt i will. I was told the M2C setup with the addable set screws is the ticket and will use one if i see fit but for now i don't want anymore clutch.

Watch it mister, i see your signature. Traitor! If i had more clutch my truggy would be flipping over backwards outta the turns. Looking at the shoes after 2 hard days of running i'm thinking this B5 will be cutting my shoe life in half. Now it's gonna cost me $11 in clutch parts for every gallon of fuel i use. It was 11 bucks for every 2+ gallons. Can you take up a collection for shoes at your track next weekend for me? Damn engine tore up the rear gearbox early in the day and had to replace everything. At the end of the main the front gears clattering under braking. 2 sets of r&p's, diffs, bearings and gearbox covers. What will happen with more clutch? Damn spur gear will come flying out, and it's all fun and games til someone loses an eye mister!

Default B5

Neil,
I will be purchasing a modded B5 from you in the next couple weeks. I have read the 2013 is the pipe to have. I currently own a JP4, JP3, DYN 086,DYN053 will any of these pipes work well. If the 2013 is the best that's what I'll buy. Also I recently bought the ascendancy clutches for bug and trug have you had any experince with this clutch in a modded B5.

I thought I answered all your questions in the emails that were sent...maybe they got lost in the spam folder ? FYI if you ever need me just call me on the phone..I always answer ! I also find talking over the phone much more efficient....

I got the OD SS here and opened up...just working on doing the timing specs....

It uses a oddball bearing size, so we have no bearings that will fit...Not sure if you want me to wait for your TKO"s to arrive, or if i should just mod the engine and send it back with the stock bearings...
