Lightbulb slash custom paint questions

I am totally new to the R/C world. My first truck, traxxas slash, is on its way to me now. Since its my first rig I don't wanna spend a lot of money on upgrades yet, so far I'm only gonna paint a blank shell. Would appreciate any and all tips on this. What kind of tape, layering, how to make symmetrical shapes on each side, these kinds of things. Thank you for your help
