Default Triton Jr. Problems :(

Ok I have been poking around here for a while and have not found any answers.

I have a Triton Jr. Charger/discharger or it is supposed to be. It charged great. I love it for it's size and ability to charge different packs perfectly. but I have not been able to get it to discharge or cycle. I talked to Triton but it only had a 1 year warrantee and that was gone a while ago.

What does happen is it looks like it is discharging (the counter for mAh goes up but the but there is no Amp draw and the battery voltage does not move.

I have taken it apart and have not found any soldering errors or missing wires.

Does anyone know how the discharge feature actually work? all the other dischargers I have seen use a power resistor to "use" up the power in a battery but the Triton Jr does not have a power resistor...

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Secondly I am just starting out racing 1/12 scale carpet and I would like to know what would be a good system to take care of my batteries.

Thanks

I have an Ice thats done the same thing - I discharged a 5s pac and 10amps and all was fine - charger part where discharge energy is dissipated got hot and all was fine. Let it cool and tried to discharge the 2nd pac - nothing, like you said, the counter counts, but no heat is produced and nothing is being discharged from the batt.

Options - repair or replace. I read somewhere these are known for this, the discharge failing, but don't remember what it is thats actually failing. I believe its an electronic component - power transistor maybe, but its not as simple as a unsoldered connection. I replaced mine with a Team Checkpoint 1030 - now have a 30amp discharge capability.

I think these are not worth repair costs, but don't know that for sure. Price recently dropped on Ice to about $100 making is even less likely its price effective to have it repaired.

Doubt the Triton is much different.

Thanks for the info. As Much as I like this charger I think a new one may be in order. Would you recommend the TC1030? is there anything that you dislike?

Since I am in the market for a new charger what would be the best one.

I am looking to use it for racing and general use as well. I race 1/12th scale carpet and use 4 cell batterys and I have a e-maxx that I use 2, 7 cell batteries for.

Thanks

I like that the 1030 is now the same price as the Ice used to be. When it had been $180, it was hard to justify - so many other chargers were cheaper and better with more features. The 1030 has the backlight that everyone was dying for on the Ice. 1030 is built in the same body as the Ice so it has a small footprint.

My only complaint is there is no builtin balancer for lipos, but other than that, I've been pleased with it. If you're racing the batt conditioning on the 1030 with discharges up to 30amps may be of interest. Even if you don't currently use lipo, having the capability may save you from buying another charger when lipo does become something you want to do. You would need a $35 additional balancer and you'd be ready to charge/balance up to 4S lipo.

The Ice charger, now at ~100 bucks is not a bad choice either, I gave mine 5yrs of hard use before discharge function (only 10amps) cratered. It does lipo and just about everything else as well (neither does lead acid cells).
