Default First Person View....

Hi guys,

I am new... very new, just subscribed. I am more an Rc flyer, I mostly fly airplanes, but now it is winter and snow in Canada, so I cannot fly. But I can tingle around with some electronics...

Last year about this time I've got myself into the so called "First Person View" or in short form FPV flying. This is when you install a camera in an airplane and you fly through video goggles, seing exactly what the camera on your plane sees.

In order to test the technology out, I installed a camera in a cheap radioshack monster truck called Rammunition. The first thing I did was to throw out the cheap electronics and install real receiver, real proportional speed controller and steering. This is not a race truck - it would not even go close to any of your super equipment - however the elctronics inside is interesting.

Pictures of the build are here: http://www.ngctech.com/photoalbum/th...s.php?album=53

Two days ago I finished a so called On Screen Display module - which when connected to a camera will overlay the flight data. This works with a GPS sensor. Please check out the following video for this:

I hope you'll like it.

People have done this, though your the first I have seen using googles. It might make more fun though if you got a used PC Race Car Wheel and transfered the radio electronics to it. You can have more of a true Car feel then.

One major problem I have seen with these systems is the inability of the cameras digital eye to cope with sudden movements. Even your video shows this when its going over the snow. Planes, its not a big deal, but cars, your dealing with surface and air (jumps), so they need a camera thats going to be able to continue broadcasting with picture on a jump landing, crash, or a high speed corner.

I'm sure this tech is coming down to consumer $$ levels.

Hi, I know it is not a new thing - we've been using it in flying for many years now. However the so called "Head Tracker" which is not demonstrated in thi video - whih makes the camera turn right/left - when you turn your head right/left or camera moving up/down when you tilt your head up/down - it gives you a feeing of much better virtual reality. That way you can actually look out on the side window while still driving ahead.

I am affraid with a faster car/truck you will be dizzy or get vertigo by te end of the ride. This full imersion is really tricky. Perhaps with good shoks and reducing the vibration caused by the road and jumps the sensation is much more favorable.

However the GPS and OSD are really unique - it gives you real time speed and travelled distance - I don't think anybody did that before.

Merrry Cristmas and Hapy New Year for everybody!

I was thinking the same thing.

Now add this instead of a pistol grip R/C controller and you'll have mindblowing experience.
