I got a 6000mah 7.4v lipo. I use a duratrax ice and equinox to charge and balance it. I always hook up the balancer to the charger and interface charge it. I bought the high power leads so I can charge the lipo at 6 amps but I noticed that it will usually only charge at 6amps for about 2,000 mah than it starts to gradually go down. Its most of the time charging at 3 amps and near around 5000mah it goes down to about .45 mah and charges at the the rest of the way. Ive never charged it fully before because the voltage drops right off. Just wondering if this is normal or if there may be a problem. When I start to recharge the battery its usually around 7.1v.

I think it's normal. I have the 3s 5a 11v maxamps pack and it usually starts at 4.8 amps and goes to 3.x after 2000Mah and drops down to .6 when it's within 1000mah of it's max.

Ah alright, just making sure nothing was wrong. Just seemed funny that I bought the high power taps and I only get about 2000 mah of 6 amp charging out of them and its back down.

I also use a duratrax ice charger. My does the same thing, but if I run the battery long enough it will stay a 6amps for some time. What your charger is doing is normal.

It is normal. The last part of a li-po charge is the longest. It has to reduce the power as it reaches the end.

Say if I stop charging around 5700-5800 when the charge current is real low will it make a noticable difference in runtime?

Platinumjason, It won't make to much of a difference. You will notice it. But there are many that only charge to 90% so they can avoid that long last bit of charging. But this is done when in a hurry for a race or something on that order.

Yes charging at 1 amp with a 6000 mAh pack is fine. It just takes a long time. You can safely charge that pack at 6amps.

I see one person in particular always posting about the astroflight 109 being much faster than the ICE. I don't understand how that could be true. When charging the packs C rating is always taken into account. For the Maxamps it is 1C so for my 5500 that is 5.5 amps. So how could any charger be faster than another. The ice will charge at 1C until the pack reaches it's charge voltage and then starts tapering off on the current. Isn't that how all Lipo chargers work?

The only difference would be how it charges and the electronics in the charger might make it charge at a different rate. Really though it's not like it's a whole 1 hour difference. Trying to get something done faster often leads to problems. Let your charger do the job that it was intended to do.
