Crystals do die occasionally, but that's very rare. Usually only severe shock will damage them, otherwise pretty darned hard to kill an xtal. Definitely can't kill them with any 6V DC wrong connection.

I had a gas car run full throttle (60kmh++?!) into a bluestone kerb once, the impact was hard enough to yank the xtal OUT OF THE RECEIVER and landed 20' away. Thereafter the xtal still works, but a little flakey. That's been my only xtal casualty so far.


If you have spare xtals on the same band, by all means try them too. You never know...
