Default Rally Legends help

Hey all. Our neighbors gave my son a Rally Legends rc. Older but unused. He had a blast drifting it around the house but then there was the dreaded smoke n smell. I think the speed controller is toast.. it looks like an older and pretty hokey unit (as compared to our traxxas stuff). The Rally Legends website is German and they only work with dealers. The speed controller they show as a replacement is newer looking than what we have, so I ordered one off ebay based off what I could see from their site.. WP-1040 brushed. It doesn't seem to pair with the radio.

I'm at a loss of what do next.. I know enough about rc to be dangerous. We would like to keep the radio. What's my next step to getting this going?

I have pics but cant post them yet...

THANKS!

ps there's no rc shop in our town

So the transmitter and receiver should still be bound together. I'm not familiar with that specific ESC, but you likely need to calibrate the throttle and brake end-points. If you're not familiar this is telling the ESC what are the neutral, full throttle and full brake positions. A lot of ESCs try to do this automatically upon boot up, so I would recommend making sure that if your radio has a throttle trim setting, that it's centered. Otherwise, I would review the documentation to see if it walks you through a calibration process.

P.S. What body is on the Rally Legend?

Its the Fiat Abarth.

Ok.. so I should theoretically be able to get this WP-1040 to work if I fiddle with the settings enough?

I messed with it for a long while months ago and shelved it, but now my son is itching to get it going, and I'm pissed I can't figure it out so I'll need to just go through the motions again. The instructions leave much to be desired.

This ESC autocalibrates throttle/brake. Radio and receiver shouldn't need to be re-bound. Did you confirm you have power to the receiver? When you power on the ESC, you should be getting some "beeps" from the motor. 1 Long means self test and calibration is complete.

As Angrymelon said, make sure any throttle trim is set to middle as this may prevent the ESC from arming.

Gerry brings up a good point. When you power on the car, do you get any steering response from the servo? A lot of my ESCs will let the steering function as soon as the car is powered on regardless if the ESC calibration has occurred. Not sure if that is the case here but that would hopefully tell you if you're getting power.

Thanks guys... battery is charging lol. It's an nicad thing and the charger is hokey as hell. Had a Euro plug on it so I had to splice in a proper two prong. So waiting on that...

I did set the throttle to '0%'.

I want to say that when I would try to turn the car on the wheels would spin for a second without any radio input, and then nothing. Just enough to shoot it off the table lol.

But like I said I am revisiting this project after a long break, so let me get a charge on the battery and we can go from there.

Ok. Plugged in battery, turned on radio, turned on switch on esc and got 2 beeps and a red light blinking on esc. On edit, steering works, no throttle.

You mentioned that you have Traxxas stuff. How difficult would it be for you to try a try the Traxxas radio gear on the Rally Legend or vise versa?

Alright I got steering and throttle which is way more progress than before. I need to finish charging the battery fully and then plug in all the accessory lights, etc. There's a zillion things for a kid to break on this. I'm sure there will be some head scratching but I think we got it for now.

A big stumbling block for me was a diagram of the receiver servo connections. It showed one thing but was labelled another.. I got transfixed on the diagram which was wrong.

School me on light systems. This thing has headlights/tail lights (should be on all the time) as well as brake, directionals, and backup that used to operate in accordance with what the vehicle was doing. Before the old esc died they all worked.
Now we just have headlights, and the backups come on once in a while with steering input and the directional kinda work one direction. All the wiring etc is in good order and worked pre new esc. Do some esc's not work with light systems or? Cant imagine it's a radio setting.

I hate lights.. kid loves them... ugh.
