Unhappy Starter Box Won’t Contact Flywheel

Hello,
I just put a new Kyosho 3 Shoe clutch kit on my car but just realized that the flywheel is 2mm smaller than the last one . Now my starter box won’t contact my flywheel, what could I do to fix this, my engine mounts are already super low, my starter box has a big wheel though, it has a 100mm rubber wheel.

thanks in advance

few options, one would be if your flywheel goes up enough you can dremel the chassis wider so it can connect and even more check if your starter box has a way to move that wheel up, what starter box do you have? If your wheel is worn more then likely it can be flipped (most starter box wheels can do this) and that would give you something to work with if your wheel has a worn groove. In my opinion unless you can get lowered mounts this may be a situation where you need to go shopping for a box that can do the job. On my Losi 8 4.0 I had some lowered mounts but they were forsure custom that I got from a friend and didn’t work with my Losi box. If you have some rtr mounts then your fine just get some kit mounts or aftermarket. Aftermarket may offer a lower set up but I would assume they follow a standard. Hopefully.

i have an old Kyosho buggy, it’s the Kyosho inferno mp5. My mounts really can’t go lower without my engine hitting the chassis. I have this old Duratrax starter box with those huge 100mm wheel on it. I was looking at how the modern boxes have 50mm wheels on it which is why they work so well. I think I’m gonna widen the chassis opening because a new starter box is just too expensive

Probably best to just get the correct flywheel diameter. You can most certainly custom fit the chassis to work, but you also could weaken it too. Just food for thought. Good luck!

Thanks for the info, I already fixed the issue, found a 36mm flywheel, didn’t want to grind the chassis

I know it's done, but I used to always taper the bottom of the chassis opening with a dremel to give the larger diameter starter box wheel some extra clearance. Then you weren't necessarily enlarging the hole in your chassis -- just putting a chamfer on it. But the bigger flywheel was a smart move.

ah I see, thank you! I will use that in the future for my other cars if I cannot find a larger flywheel for them

Protek Surestart box? I shimmed the wheel assembly in my box up a bit.

No it’s not the protek box, it’s an old duratrax universal box
