Default motor and esc help

I am very mechanical but stupid when it comes to electronics, 90% of what I will be doing is racing on a concrete shop floor or messing around my driveway.. in simple terms can someone elplain motor turns, esc, and batteries to me please? I looked all over the place and im struggling to make sense of it, mainly how manu turns on a motor, what esc I use for whatever motor, and the 2s-3s-4s when it comes to motors....HELP PLEASE???

It would be a lot easier to understand what car you need help selecting electronics for. Just to confirm when you say "racing", are you planning to race at a club with an organized group or just "bashing" around with friends in private?

Reason I ask is that generally, most bashers go with sensorless electronics to make things less complicated and less expensive. If you will be racing at a club, then typically there are restrictions to cell counts for each class and in most spec classes they will restrict motor size as well.

Generally 2S Lipo is used in most 1/10 cars with 540 sized motors (3650 cans).
Sensorless comes in KV ratings with 3000KV being a moderate choice
Sensored motors com in turn ratings from 4.5T to 25.5T with the smaller the turn the more powerful and 10.5T being similar in power to most 3000KV motors

Gearing is very important!

Some folks might opt to go with 3S instead of gearing up or selecting a faster motor, lots of different ways to tune for speed/temps.

4S-6S is generally used for 1/8 buggy with 4268 cans and larger 4274 cans are used in truggy. 2000KV is a moderate size motor for 4S.

Once you have selected a proper motor, then you simply choose an appropriate ESC for that motor, most brands will sell a combo with the ESC already matched to make this easy.

Low budget brand to consider is GoolRC
Middle of the road brand with high quality to consider is HobbyWing
High end brand with extra features to consider is Tekin

Trying to avoid writing a book, but this is the quick and dirty, happy to help you narrow your search once you give us some more specifics of car and plan for use.

Thank you, when I say racing I mean organized racing among friends, no official club rules or anything like that just run for fun. My cars are based off of a 2wd Traxxas Slash we will be mostly running on a concrete garage floor, sometimes a dirt oval. I currently have two 2s lipos and one 3s lipo. In reference to the number of turns and KV rating, that is where I need help does "more powerful" mean faster but more heat build up? can I turn a motor too hard and kill it?

One of my cars came with a Castle motor and I didnt try it too much yet, just playing around my own shop. I have found several Hobbywing combos on ebay for around a hundred bucks but Im not sure which kv or turn number to go with, if heat build up is an issue I do have a couple small fans ordered. I noticed after messing around my shop that the esc gets a little warm but the motor shows no signs of heat

Assuming a Traxxas Slash with a 2s lipo with no official racing rules running on a smooth concrete floor, what would you personally recommend?

I do appreciate the help

power selection for a 2WD Slash can be tricky... for dirt oval and straight line drag racing (with reasonable traction), I'm more inclined to think you might appreciate having more power, but there comes a point where having too much power can cause your car to do wheelies or worse, spin out of control in a tight turn. I suppose that's where proper adjustment of the slipper comes into play, but not having an oil sealed diff will make it more difficult to get optimal power transfer when accelerating hard on corner exit.

Do you guys prep your concrete floor by spraying with grape soda to increase traction?

Reason I ask is that the more traction you get, the more power you can reasonably apply. Another trick to consider is getting 17mm hex adapters and invest in quality GT8 wheels from Sweep. That will give you far more of an advantage than anything else, especially if you sauce your tires just before each race

I would keep your Castle motor for now, that should be plenty of power, if anything it may be too much, ha!

If anyone else in your group is running a 4WD car, then running your 2WD against them is like taking a knife into a gun fight.

the "track" is just a concrete garage floor with epoxy paint, I did buy a set of the 17mm hexes already, the cars we run are exclusively 2wd slash, I do plan on keeping my castle for noe but I have another car that is a bone stock roller and I want to build it from the ground up so the first thing on my list is motor and esc. I think I will go with something in the 3000-4000Kv range for now on a 2s lipo. I just need to make sure I get the right size motor.
as far as the tires, I just looked those up on ebay, I may buy a set are they good concrete tires? the seem like the equivlent of drag slicks. I used to race dirt late models so the idea of tire prep isnt anything new to me

Yes, Sweep EXP50's are a great balance between performance and longevity. The tires won't balloon and you'll get far better traction control and corner handling than the stock Slash tires on concrete... I'm a little concerned with the floor being epoxy, that might be super slick and can be a challenge if you don't prep it... dust will be your worst enemy, at the very least I would mop it about an hour before your race, preferably with grape soda

the floor is very slick, that is the issue, I am looking for all the grip I can get. I will try to get a set of tires and in the meantime I will try to find a motor and esc for my second car.

Thanks for the help!
