I remember back at in 2000 there was a track in Poughkeepsie NY that used to race a rally class on an indoor track. I'm still in the hobby since then and II can tell you that was the most fun class I've ever raced. It was basically Losi Rally Weapons vs. HPI's RS4 rally. The track was technical with small jumps, it was just perfect.

What's everyones thought here on foam bumpers? I was going to make a tight fitting bumper that contours to the inside of the body with the hope of protecting it from cracking. Is it better to support the body or let it flex to prevent damage?

I can't believe it's taken me this long to find this thread! We run a poorly organized little rally group just east of Dallas, TX. We're on Facebook as Lonestar Scale Rally Racing Association, meet at a backyard course, and run for time and bragging rights. Championship points are loosely tallied and it's a relaxed scene. There are between 14 and 6 racers at the events ( the horrible weather the past few months caused multiple rainouts and reschedules). We'll make it grow as we can. The cool thing is, every lap is different- the cars are sensitive to the the track changes, and we race evenings or early mornings, so visibility changes. I literally can't get enough of it.

I wish I could find people in my area interested in doing some type of rally racing, so if anybody is in or around Charleston, SC hit me up.

I've thought about buying one of those traxxas drag racing lights to use, you'd have a starting light and an accurate times. You could practically go anywhere and setup a track (tarmac parking lot, baseball field, etc). Just throw down a bunch of cones then everybody does a timed lap, switch up the cones and do another lap, just rinse and repeat for as many stages as you want. I thought it might be an easy alternative for those without permanent rally tracks in their area.

Does that Zeppin use a transponder in the car itself? I was trying to avoid that, which is why I liked the Traxxas idea. Plus with the traxxas light you can have the starting line and finish line in different places. I'm not really looking to make a circuit that you run multiple laps on, I wanted to more or less replicate actual rally races from point A to point B. Then after everybody has set a time you move points A and B to a different layout, you do that as many times as you like.
Does anybody actually run an RC rally race like how I described, or is everybody just running a track with multiple laps? I'm trying to think of a cheap and easy way for people to do rally racing and make it portable enough to setup anywhere, and also not require personal transponders. All of this is really just me thinking out loud at the moment.
Maybe my first question should be about real rally racing and how their timing works, does the timer start when the light says go, or does the timer start when the car breaks a beam at the starting line?

Yeah, I've never actually used the Traxxas system before. I've been looking for somebody that has used one before to tell me what it's limitations are, for all I know it won't work the way I was intending to use it.

Such a sad but true statement, lol, I don't really want to run around behind my car either. I was hoping to find a happy medium between the two.
