I'm disappointed that the gearing is almost certainly changing but it's not the first time they've done it. The M01/M02 and M04 had different ratios.
Edit: Oh and they already make an 18T pinion so not sure why that's listed as one of the new ones.

But...I don't think the gearing will just LEAP from 18T to 22T.
However, Tamiya every now and then do something REALLY stupid.
i.e. TA05 M-Four. LiFe battery and 380 motor. What were they thinking?

Hey guys!! I wanted to ask if I could possibly get some M-chassis advice. I am a retired M racer and haven't owned or had my hands on one since about 2005-06 when our track and LHS closed down, so I am out of the loop when it comes to anything to do with them now. I really, really miss owning one so I would like to buy another. What I want to do is build something really fast for wide open fun running in parking lots, BL powered and of course lipo. Now when I raced them I had an M-02 and M-03, and my biggest gripe with them is that you could only run shotgun style packs in them. Have they come as far nowadays for you to be able to run lipo packs in them? Also, what is the maximum KV motor that the most recent chassis diff/trans can withstand? Sorry for coming off as a noob, but as I said I have been away from the M chassis for a loooooong time.
The M05 v2 R spec is cheap right now from rcmart so use that as your starting point. It even accepts standard lipo packs.

There are shotgun type lipo packs. The M05 v2 chassis can take rectangular packs too.
Racing is rarely defined by KV, but by turns. I ran my M05 with a 17.5 and it was spectacular. It's got a 21.5 in it now, and it's still mighty fast. The biggest gear that it's designed for is a 20 tooth pinion. Now, the car is FWD, so it's hard to load up the drivetrain. I don't think there's any limit I'd really put on the KV I'd put in there. It'll just spin tires.
Don't lock the diff though...

Yes, I know about the shotgun style packs, but they are difficult to find in the amount of MAH that I want. I want at least 5000 mah, which is what I have plenty of in rectangle style. What I want is a RWD M chassis

The Hobbywing 13T ezRun combo is a great powerplant for these cars, but if you're going insane you can go bigger. I've heard of people putting in hot modified motors for velodrome runs, but they went easy on launch and didn't use brakes otherwise the gears shredded.

The 13T won't get you that speed, and anything that does may be a handful for a RWD m chassis. But you could always try the 9T ezRun for some tire shredding fun.
