Default Noob brushless ESC question - programming card/box needed?

I have a very noob question regarding programming card/box for brushless ESC. Ive been out of the loop for a while and new to the whole brushless motor thing. I just placed an order for a Trackstar GenII One Cell ESC but I forgot to add a programming card to my order. Is it absolutely needed in order for my ESC to run? Or can I run the ESC as is out of the box for now? I dont plan on racing, just weekend get together with a few friends on the track. Can I run the ESC as is out of the box and still get decent performance?

Thanks

Ya hobbyking shipping can get expensive especially from international warehouse. There should be a less efficient way to program it with a button on it but im not sure.
