Looking to get a f1 and I wanted to know is the 3racing fgx still competitive today. My track runs rubber tire 21.5 2s, and I like the price of the fgx and if I get it I plan to order the front independent suspension as well.

On a prepped track with hardly any bumps, the FGXs are at a disadvantage compared to the direct drive F1s. Don't be fooled by the price, they require quite a bit of upgrades to make them strong and work better out of the box.

Also make sure the car is legal for your track if you plan to race it. Some regulations explicitly ban non- direct-drive cars.

As said check with your local track rules. The upgrades would be EXOTEK Chassis, $95ish, EXOTEK IFS coneversion, $ 25ish, IFS system, $25ish, then play around with gearing, got mine to 40t pinion, slightly lenghten hole with dremel bit approx 1-2mm. The rest of theFGX upgrades is a prference, upgrade steering inaluminium, really the stock as less movement and is ligther, I got one and really didn't need it. Over all it was a good car but does lack still slightly at top even with the gearing but very close.

The price isn't what was attracting me to this kit, I figured the independent suspension would be a plus, and I wanted a f1 that would handle a bit more like a touring car rather that a pan car. I don't mind buy some upgrades, hell I usually go over board with them.

I race one competively and the only options that you really need are the high speed gear set and the rear sway-bar set to get the rear of the car to rotate better (to much rear grip). The rest are eye candy. The front independent suspension upgrade works great. Also when you get your rubber tires get some mediums for the rear and softs for the front (which is opposite of the other F1s which have very little rear grip due to the solid rear axle designs).

It still drives like a rear wheel drive car on rubber tires. don't expect touring car driving characteristics from any f1. Not trying to discourage you. just want you to know what to expect.

that being said I like the IRS setup of the fgx but it does require upgrades. more for durability of the front arms and top deck than driveability. many people like the exotek front arm braces. a full chassis upgrade is the ultimate fix but not completely necessary. I did the chassis upgrade and got the rabbit conversion. absolutely love it. on a technical medium-small track I can run up front with the f104.
