Default What's that clicking noise?

My sons Team Associated SC10 RTR has the gear diff in the tranny still. It was making a clicking grinding noise under acceleration and the LHS said the gear diff needed to be rebuilt. So we bought the parts, tore it apart and promptly pulled up the video on how to build the gear diff properly on AE's website. We bulit it and everything was nice and smooth. Tested it out in the front yard for a couple minutes and got everything adjusted. We went to the track this morning and he started driving and the clicking noise came back. So we packed up, headed home and tore it apart. Everything looked fine. Put it all back together and the clicking noise was still there. LKS guys say to just scrap the tranny and start fresh. Not an option. I have torn it apart a reassembled it a couple times and the click noise goes away and comes back shortly after it has been running for a while. Any pointers?

Have you checked all of the bearings?

That is my next mission. a quick inspection showed them intact, but I think I need to look at them deeper to see. Thanks for the tip!

I'm not super familiar with the SC10 gear diffs but I think they are known for clicking under acceleration if they aren't shimmed properly. You could probably either search this thread or do some general research on shimming SC10 gear diffs and find the solution. I believe what is happening is the gears in the diff are allowed to much gap between each other and skip. It's probably hard on the gears but I don't think it's worth buying all new stuff over. If you find out that this is the case, let you your LHS know so they don't steer anyone else in the wrong direction.

Agreed, worth making sure you're shimmed up fairly well. I can't confess to knowing how to do it 100% correctly, but I managed to sort mine out OK. Feels good.

Shim it behind the sun gears. Try one shim on each side and work from there.

I had the gear dif in my sc10 for a while till I went with the ball dif, and I never had a clicking sound!! It sounds like something is either getting between the gearing ,in the dif or the spur, but this is just my opinion

Default what Shims to use

I currently have the gear diff built just like the directions state and also the video on the Team Associated website. I am not sure what shims I should use behind the sun gears.

Blitzkid, I use a gear cover and I don't see any evidence of debris or things in the gear box itself. I have another SC10 and don't have this problem. I have torn them apart together and everything gearing looks the same. I need to dig into the bearings sometime today as that was brought up in a previous post.

Thanks for the tips.

does anyone know if these aluminum shock caps (http://teamassociated.com/parts/details/1598/)

work well on the ft threaded shocks?

My plastic ones keep leaking, so i think i want some aluminum ones. Someone please tell me if this is a bad idea...

No bleeder screw and extra weight that you absolutely don't need up high on your car. If you have the standard caps and a decent o-ring they won't leak.

Hmm, I don't think either of my SC10 trucks have the upper O ring where the cap sits. o_O Didn't even know they had one until I just looked at the manual.. Both of my trucks purchased second hand from different people.
