I believe the answer is the difference in the width of the tires. The 1/8 buggies will definitely eat thru the track(like blade cutting thru paper) and deform it. Especially sa mga jumps where one uses full power. But in the case of monster trucks, the tire width are wider thus more grip. Just my thought po.

In most instances, truggies uses a more powerful engines than buggies. e.g RB TM928, Novarossi JP 528X Race, OS 30VG, Collari .32 to name a few. Some of these truggies also have 2 speed transmission. the destructive capabilities to the track on these 2 vehicles, they are similar.
