I've done the thumbtack thing when I was a little kid with my rc10t2. I glued the thumbtacks in though instead of tape. I suppose shoegoe would have worked really well for this. I remember the tacks didn't last long though. Short roofing nails may work better. Super fun, just cover the appropriate electronics.
