Keeping your wires short and making good connections will help your performance the most. Don't make them so short that you will not be able to reterminate the wire in the future. After you solder and desolder a pack a few times the end of the wire will become frayed and not so good. Allow a little bit of slack so that you can clip off the end of the wire, strip it back a little, and retin the end for use.
Just to add fuel to the fire.....
This I have seen.... 14 gauge from the ESC to the motor and 12 gauge from the ESC to the battery.....
