Pad thickness will only help with the issue of the spring needing to be compressed so far in order to get the needed tension on the slipper pads to bit as much as needed.
The basket kit inludes an addtional plate that goes in between the two slipper pads and the plate is slotted just like the slipper but so that it will drive the transmission shaft. This setup doubles the effective friction/drive surface you have for the rear wheels on the truck.
