Foam is composed of millions of bubbles in a material. Open cell foam has cells (bubbles) that are not complete so air flows through it. Open cell will compress more but wear faster because of it. Closed cell is the opposite, it won't compress as much because the air bubbles are trapped. It lasts way longer but it's been difficult to make it soft enough for 3 1/2lb electric cars.
