I don't quite agree here. I almost always run box stock settings on my 417. Sometimes I try to experiment with small changes, but I almost always end up back at the kit setup.

But both are very good cars. I chose the Tamiya because it was quicker for me, but I have also experienced tracks where the Xray was quicker. I would say though, that the Xray is more durable, so if you are new, I would choose the Xray any day.

For both of them, get a geardiff for the rear, and if you are going to be racing on asphalt, get some HPI Silver springs.
