Another question: Are there any tuners that are doing customizations on these? Perhaps it makes more sense to have it professionally rebuilt.

I would have to say NO! I put a new rod in mine because during break in the rod went loose. No time on the track at all!
$45.00 FOR A NEW ROD and it didnt even last 1/4 of a gallon, frigin junk!!!!!!!!!!! The Rossi Rex motor I have now is much better quality.
