So I decided to spend some time on my shocks tonight. The shafts on my B4.1 have the gold colored coating on them but I thought it seemed a bit "grabby" to the touch. When my car would sit for a while the shocks would kind of stick just a little and then free up once you moved the suspension a bit. I thought it would wear in but it hasnt....
So I took them apart and decided to use some mild rubbing compound and my drill and polish the shafts. Turned out very smooth and the coating was just fine...not worn through. I also took a small amount of the black lower internal spacer off (sanded on 600 grit) this made the o ring not compress quite as much. End result is the shocks are butter smooth now....Im stoked to see if I can feel it at the track.....car settles on the bench nice with no more "sticking"
Just thought Id share in case anyone else has noticed this with their assoc shocks! good luck guys...

You're using the stock AE o-rings, right? Are you "assembly lubing" them with green slime? When you are talking about rubbing compound are you talking like for automotive body work?
