Does your engine have a pull start attached to it? If so, check the clearance of the lower rear pull start attachment screws on the engine. I had the an STS .28 engine and the pull start assembly was touching the inner edge of the chassis. It was not easily visible/detectible after setting the gear mesh and tightening the engine mount screws. After running say 5 + minutes one of the spur gears would strip. The engine would vibrate off of the edge of the chassis cutout, changing the gear mesh and allowing the spur gear to strip. I fixed it by removing about 1 mm of chassis material off of the upper edge corner where the interference occurred.
My car was a brand new DM1 Spec, purchased in October of '08. It looks like the newer chassis have more clearance in this area.
The STS .28' pull start case stuck out further than the Force .28 engine pull start.
