here is a list of what I've tried with the engine today and results.
1; switched out head/head button= no change. So my thought of it having a crack where glow plug sits was wrong.
2;put the new GX-II head and button on a engine I knew was running great= ran fine
3;put a brand new carb. on the gxII-ho along with a break in shim= good running, but still to a small degree wants to go rich when I fill tank.
4;put on brand new tank/pipe/lines= good running, but still wants to go rich when I fill tank
5;Installed my gx-3r in above=same as always hauls butt. Will idle all day same ole song and dance with that engine.
6;put gx-II carb. on my gxr-3 port= no run, impossible to tune. what am I saying, you can't tune the carb at all.
7; put long lsn into the new gxr carb I had am now getting a balance from engine. very touchy to tune with the new metal lsn. Matt if there is anything you can think of that I'm doing wrong let me know. A couple of questions;is the metal lsn suppose to have 2 o-rings on it? And what were your needle settings? I know mine won't be identical but am curious to how close or far off i am. I am using byrons 30% now with an os-p3 plug.
with the problems you have been having, i would say bad fuel! i was running byrons last year and had similar problems, switched fuels and kicked myself in the a$$ for not switching sooner. i dont feel byrons is what they make it out to be!
