Since your in NZ, hopefully Grizz will see this one..............it depends where, what angle, how deep etc as to wether or not you may get an air leek there now, you may need to use an engine sealant if it is where is supposed to be sealed by the O ring ?????

Telling you what you should have done differently would depend on how you did it, you only mentioned the heat method, but you didn't mention how you managed to scratch it.
