A spool allows you to accelerate harder out of the corner as it ensures the power goes to the wheel that has grip (the loaded outside wheel), instead of to the unloaded inside wheel.

The slipper spool is basically the same but can slip under very heavy load such as a crash, preventing driveshafts and blades being damaged.
