The R2 is basically the same as the R3 as far as running on asphalt. I've just started leaving my gear covers off and have been satisfied with the exposed gear box so far. It is scary looking seeing all of the gears exposed but so far so good and the car looks more exotic without the gear covers . All I run on is temporary parking lot tracks so you have to expect the occasional rocks and debris on these surfaces. The best thing to do is avoid running out of line and out into the marbles and maybe just cut a peice of lexan to cover the top opening only over the gear boxes. The other thing to do is not over lube the diff balls with grease- this will leach out and attract grime to the diff gear. To be honest i catch more sand debris in my spur gear than the drive gears.
