if you are using the gearing that traxxas supplies than you are over geared. the gearing that traxxas has on the truck when you buy it is 13/54 which is ok for offroad. the gear they supply in a bag is the 18 pinion. the traxxas manual states not to use the 18 in offroad use.
My original 5805 2wd Slash kit with the AM radio came with a 18/86 stock with the Titan 550 for offroad and an optional 23 tooth pinion for onroad use. On my track I used 17/86. Read the manual. It has a nice little color coded chart for the recommended gearing.
You don't need a temp gun to run the Slash. Just follow the manual!
