If you use some padding in the battery boxes, I am sure you can find a way to run soft case packs. I have been running softcase packs in my e-1/8th for 3 years and I have never had a problem. You just have to make sure that the pack can't move around in the battery boxes. Neoprene works good for padding. You can find it is 1'x1' sheets at your local craft store. You could also use something like weather stripping for doors. Comes it big rolls at the hardware store and is usually self adhesive.
