nah, the backing plate option was brought out only becoz some
gorilla owners were cranking down those little 2mm screws waay
too tight and squishing the plastic. We caught that early on and
only put the screws on loosely + loctite.
Besides, Square brought out the 1st backing ring.
That's one reason why I usually ran a diff up front on the Evo3. With a diff up front, the diff gear is support on both sides. So you don't have to worry about the gear warping. Thus you don't have a problem stripping out gears.

No the balldiff don't support the gear anymore than the oneway.
The outdrives+diffring don't reach to where the gearteeth are.
Got a twindiff car that was mustered into newbie duty (ie passed
around to trainee steerers like a 2c ho). Was rolling it around last
night and its got a funny notchyness in the drivetrain somewhere... uhoh.
