It doesn't really matter. The long needle gives a slightly smoother powerband, and maybe a little better economy. It's easy to swap them over.
Just remember the LSN sits about the same, say 1.5 - 1.75 turns in whether you are running short or long needle, but the HSN settings are quite different for the two LSN needles -
Short LSN needle - HSN = .5 to .75 "TURNS" in from flush.
Long LSN needle - HSN = 1 to 2 "HOURS" only in from flush.
If you get lean bog at or below half a tank with the long LSN fitted, then richen the HSN 1 hour at a time until the lean bog goes.
