I had a similar problem and it was not the speed control. It may be the sensor board in your motor. Mine was dead direct from novak out of the box. By luck, the ballistic series all uise the same board and I had another one from a touring car on hand.

MMP in this configuration is known to need a capacitor or external BEC also.
