Michael actually ran 17.5 at Fairy Meadow on the weekend. They race 17.5 in the US, so I think it is ok. Another of the guys ran a 13.5 on the weekend too, he has been running it at our club meets and usually finishes top 3 even at Edgeworth where it is quite open, so I'm inclined to say start with 17.5.
I spoke to some European 12th guys about this not so long ago, they told me they were running 10.5 in a spec series but that there was almost no difference to Mod a lot of the time and that they really couldn't see the point in that.
I'm keen to try and push 17.5 at my club too, so I'm really hoping we can get enough support to run it in the series. Personally I need to run Mod or I won't improve, but when I started racing 12th I would have loved for there to have been a Stock class.
If 17.5 1/12 is ok and I imagine the spurs and pinions would end up about the same size it would have to encourage newcomers to 1/12 without the mental speed of open or even 10,5.
Imagine if 1/12 scale had true novice/feeder class as I would think a 17.5 at 3.7v would be fairly soft compared to the lower winds, kv ratings etc.
